Stroyboard Evaluated

A storyboard is a sequence of images, usually hand drawn, that seeks to visualise and represent the sequence of shots in a film. In addition to the drawings there is information about dialogue, movement of actors or objects within the frame, the shot duration and the movement of the camera. It does not necessarily have to be made of high quality finished drawings, but should be functional and seek to convey information about how the shots will be framed, how long they will last and how they will be sequenced.

Although an essential pre-production document used for exploring ideas and creative possibilities, a finished storyboard is also used whilst filming to give actors and the crew clear direction as to the nature of the content for each shot. Likewise the storyboard will be essential in post production as it will form the plan for which to edit the footage.

In my storyboard I have used various shot types in an attempt to produce a narrative to the lyrics. I have used long shots to represent the loneliness of the smaller boy and two shots to demonstrate the relationship between the bigger boy and his girlfriend. Surroundings include the beach to portray a romantic illusion and a close up of the proposal will be used, as it is crucial to the narrative. The emotions and facial expressions of the characters are essential to create a professional production piece as it will convey the contrasting moods between the characters. Close-ups and extreme close ups have been used in the storyboard to imply these feelings. Props are vitally important within the music video and the storyboard illustrates various shots of the music equipment. Guitars and drums will feature within the music video and the footage will include close ups of the instruments to show the importance of the actual music being played. A pan from right to left will also be used to illustrate the empty space and therefore the loneliness of the smaller boy. I have also used a point of view shot as it emphasises the realism within the music video. Realism is hugely important in making the audience believe that the storyline actually exists. I will also use an over the shoulder shot of the smaller boy, which will show the bigger boy and his girlfriend kissing. The couple kissing will be in focus, and the shoulder will be out of focus. I intend to use this depth of field to demonstrate that the smaller boy’s thoughts are blurred and the couple in focus are the reason why.
