I have viewed various Arctic Monkey productions but this particular music video has given me an insight to what I want to create.
The music video constantly switches between the band and the narrative. I also want to focus on the band during the chorus and the long instrumental part, which features in the middle of the track. The Arctic Monkeys are also used as the actors for the narrative, which is something I want to do in my media production. They feature throughout the video as the main focal point and they are represented as relaxed, yet focused on their music. They have achieved the representation by using basic settings, which is the recording studio and the clothes they wear throughout their video are representative of their target audience.
In the majority of the Arctic Monkeys music videos there is consistency, which is portrayed in the way the band is staged and the involvement of the instruments as props. Below is the establishing shot of the music video Brianstorm, which again involves the band members and their instruments. Both of these music videos use close ups and mid shots of the band member’s instruments to emphasise not only the abilities of the band members but to demonstrate that their focus is solely on the music and the lyrics involved.

The simplicity of the shots and the mise-en-scene appeal to their target audience, which research shows to be aspirers. The inclusion of pubs and walking along the street with friends is used in the narrative of Teddy Picker, which is effective because the target audience will be likely to relate to their lifestyles. Finally, within the Indie genre there is always a focus on how the band has become as well recognised in the UK (especially in this genre of music as they generally start out in garages or small local gigs) so there is a real emphasis on close ups of the guitarists and drummers.
This music video has identified that there is a huge emphasis on the band members playing instruments within this genre. The images above show that although the band member driving to their next gig the music they play still has an impact on their lifestyles. The enjoyment of the music and the band members enjoying themselves on the beach enforces a feel good factor and perhaps implies that they have a relaxed approach towards their music and target audience.
In comparison the two videos are very similar because they both represent playing music as a serious, but enjoyable aspect of their life. The two bands share similarities in their music and they both have very similar hairstyles and clothing, which again is representative of both the genre and target audience. There is a strong emphasis on their origins, which is based on their music talents and their love of doing so. Finally, the band are portrayed in group shots during the narrative with a positive body language, yet there are close shots on the instruments to show the musical capabilities of the band.
Finally, I have chosen to study this particular music video as it contrasts the two videos that I have previously analysed. As you can see from the screenshots above the video is very different from what is generally expected from an Indie genre production. However, the video was hugely publicised and deemed as a success by the creators from the reviews it received.
The video features gang warfare and is based on the original idea of Clockwork Orange, which promotes the enjoyment of violence. The location is an abandoned warehouse and the colours and costumes are very effective in portraying the fight scene. The colours used identify the two separate gangs that are fighting and make the video very easy for the audience to follow. The dark warehouse enhances the dangers that are included within the fight scene, which demonstrates the realism a location can have on the media product.
Overall, this video is very different from the ideas I believed to be accompanied with an Indie genre. However, I am going to focus on the band members in my music video and act out the narrative. During this music video there is a moment where the two leaders have a flashback of earlier memories, which I want to replicate into my music video.
